I first met this little big guy in the summer of 2022. I was out for a morning walk, coffee in hand, wandering away from camp. We’d been a large group for weeks, and I hadn’t seen any wildlife in a long time. I’ll admit—I had started to get a little careless.
That morning, the wind carried the scent of our campfire in the wrong direction, masking my presence. About 300 meters from camp, I glanced over my shoulder—just like in a comic book moment—and there he was. Standing alone, just 20 meters away.
A flood of thoughts rushed through my head, but instinct took over. I turned and walked calmly in the opposite direction. Then, he started following me. With nothing but my coffee mug in hand, I took the longest, widest loop back to camp.
The moment caught me completely off guard, but in hindsight, it was a beautiful encounter—one I’ll never forget.
